CATTLE AND DAIRY PRODUCTS. 135 Immense quantities of pork, bacon and lard are sentabroad, chiefly to England, Germany and other countriesof western Europe. The pork products sent each year The hides of cattle are tanned and changed into leather. Onepart of the tanning process consists in soaking the hides in waterin which certain kinds of bark have been steeped. Hemlock barkis often used, and as hemlock trees aboundin Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan andthe northern New England states, most ofthe tanning is done there.
