s very swift and can draw heavy loads. The milk and the flesh of reindeer are used for food. Warm clothingis made from the skins. On the bleak slopes of the Old World many amans wealth is counted in reindeer. In summer the deer feed on shootsand leaves of shrubs and trees, but iu winter they scrape through the snowto find a little gray lichen called reindeer moss. During the very short Arctic summer many seals, sea fowl andother creatures visit the far north, in search of food. Nature hasgiven to them downy feathers, soft furs or oily flesh,to help keep them warm. Great whales plow the icy water. One kind has a largesieve along each side of the mouth. The sieve is made ofhorny blades called whalebone. By means of this sieve, thewhale gathers its food fromthe sea-water which it takesinto its mouth. More thana ton of whalebone hasbeen taken from the mouthof a large whale. Many whales were for-merly killed for their oil.Petroleum has now largelytaken the place of whale Lighting purposes.
