Description
English: The commander of the Nangarhar province's Zone One, Afghan border police 6th Kandak, Colonel Niazy, presents Malik Usman with the 'longi', a traditional headdress symbolic of tribal leadership and adherence to Pashtunwali the ancient code of honor for the Pashtun people. The code is a set of rules that guides both the individual and community and is thought to predate Islam. The presentation was part of closing ceremonies for a tribal jirga, Jan. 21, of Shinwari Maliks representing six districts in Nangarhar province. The 170 village elders met to denounce the Taliban and corrupt governance. Capping the show of solidarity was a collective signing of an Anti-Taliban Shinwari Pact promising to assist security forces and agreeing not to cultivate or refine poppy products. Failure to follow the mandates of the pact will result in dire consequences for the guilty party. "We are now one tribe committed to a common cause," Niazy proclaimed.
