The Bactrian is the two-humped camel of Asia. Although it is largerthan its Arabian brother, it is not as enduring an animal. It can tightly closeits nostrils and so prevent being suffocated in the dust-storms. These camelsare killed by the Tartars for their skin and flesh, but as they are very wild andwary, they still survive in some numbers. LLAMA and ALPACA.

The Llama and Alpaca are natives of South America. From their wool,which is valuable, is spun various cloths, among which is the famous alpaca. Both these animals are gentle intemper and disposition and are usedas beasts of burden. It is said thatthey can carry as heavy a weight asone hundred pounds. When the Spaniards conqueredSouth America they found that theIndians had already succeeded intaming the llama. The Spaniardsused the creature to carry the treas-ures of silver and gold from themountains down to the coast. These; animals are quite large, frequentlystanding six feet hi^h.
