It is 10 oclock in the morning, and the huge ship is apparently asleep.Its nerves are quieted into a sort of opium dream: its nostrils show no signsof life: its heart is silent: and its teeth appear harmless. A young lieutenant slowly paces the bridge. Suddenly there is a gleamof light away off on the Long Island shore. It is followed by another andanother. An orderly is hastily despatched for the captain. HOW THE BATTLE BEGINS ON A WARSHIP. 133 Upon the bridge the brain of the sleeping giant appears with a marineglass in his hand.
