THE C A T-B I R The Cat-bird receives its common name fromits call note, which closely resembles the mewingof a cat, and is used by both sexes. This is nota particularly agreeable sound, yet indicating,as it does, the fact that these beautiful birds areentirely at home in the thickets or shrubberywhence it proceeds, we like it. The cat-bird (COPYEIQHT SECURED.) JJ,—(GalcoscopUs Carolinwnsis)—Drawn and Engraved/or the American Agriculturist. seeks rather than shuns the abodes of men. Itsfood is chiefly seeds, berries, and insects, andthough it takes some of the fruit, its presence inour gardens and orchards is productive of greatgood. The song of the male is a soft, sweetmedley, not unlike the songs of the brown thrushand mocking-bird. It is a good mimic, also, and caged it becomes quite proficient in this way,and may be taught to repeat a whistled strainmuch as the mocking-bird will do. The alarmnote is an angry chatter.
