Description

These babyface bird killers are seen regularly around my house, but I find them tough fun to photograph. Dianne thinks it is an American Kestrel.

The American Kestrel Falco sparverius is a small falcon. This bird was formerly known in North America as the Sparrow Hawk. This name was misleading because it implied a connection with the Eurasian Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus, which is unrelated - the latter is a hawk rather than a falcon.

American Kestrels form pairs in which the bond is strong, tending toward permanence. Returning migrants commonly re-establish territories held the previous year.
