startthe small plates or Wimhurst machine,by turning the small handle to the right,making several revolutions, until themaximum spark is obtained; then stopthe Wimhurst and immediately start thelarge plates by turning the drivingwheel with or without the motor, to theleft. The chain is then unhooked andthe arm turned up. This explains onemethod of charging, but every make ofmachine has its own special device to dothe same thing. Separate the dischargerods about an inch, and when machineis in action it will be seen that the cur-rent given off the positive pole is whiterin appearance, and has longer, straight handle to the spark produced. The dis-charge rods should be separated the fulldistance between the pole-pieces if nec-essary. The smallest jars will give thefinest current; the medium jars have totouch the bottom of the same, and theconnections must be properly made.Ordinarily, the machine should be letalone and the case never opened, exceptwhen necessary to adjust a plate or comb,
