In presenting these series of articlesto the student of the new branch ofdiagnosis, I wish to express my obliga-tions to the many of my collaboratorsand authors, whose various works I havefreely consulted, asking from the readerkind consideration of my effort to de-scribe fully and practically the progressof the x-ray since its discovery, thephases of which have changed, especial-ly in diagnosis, and are still changing. What are the x-rays? We do not know just what the x-raysare, nor why they are produced underthe conditions existing in a vacuumtube.
