This const-ruction of the back tube sheet renders itcomparatively easy to put in a new one. It removes the tubeends slightly beyond the reach of the radiant heat of the fireand adds a trifle .to the length o£ the combustion space In thefirebox. The sectional view of the boiler shows turnbuckles in thediagonal braces. These soon become incrusted with scale inservice, so as to be fast and rigid, but they are used in order toprovide a close adjustment in the braces when the boilers arenew. The throat stays are put in on the staybolt principle, forthe purpose of obtaining a uniform distribution of the loadsupon them. The firebox is provided with a brick arch, with animproved system of air ducts, in order to improve the combus-tiou and reduce the smoke. Another feature of the firebox isthe two fire doors.
