fsplendid springs, which always furnish a plentiful supply ofpure water to the house and other buildings on the estate.Upon reaching the entrance to the grounds, with its broadgateway and cobble-stone posts extendinginto a stone fence that surrounds the estate,we halt, for here it is that a close, unob-structed view is obtained of the entire place.The house, which faces the east, is reachedby a circular drive from two entranceways.The road extends around the south end ofthe house to the garage and barn beyond. The house has an excellent broad piazza,extending across its front, and from which,on a clear day, a wide expanse of the sur-rounding country is visible. From thepiazza at the south end a beautiful viewdown the valley of the Saugatuck River isto be had. As there were ample Held stonesupon the property, these were collectedand laid with broad, .white mortar joints,so as to form the first story wall ofthe dwelling. Thechimneys, which pierce the roof and break out of theface of the exterior walls, are also built and cappedwith stone similar to the first story wall of the house.Upon entering through the broad doorway thevisitor finds himself within the greatliving-room, which occupies the mainpart of the first floor. The wood-work is of cypress, stained andfinished in a very darkbrown. The walls havea paneled wainscoting,some five feet in heightand finished with aplate rack. Above thiswainscoting the wallsare tinted. The ceilingis beamed, formingp a n e 1 s, which areplastered. At one end oithe room is a broad, openfireplace, constructed of se-lected field stone, with itsface rising from the floor tothe ceiling. The field stoneis laid with wide mortarjoints.
