Text Appearing Before Image:
n the home it may behelpful to add a few wordsregarding the placing of thetelephone and the dispositionof the wooden box which ac-companies it. The telephonecompany will provide a cordof almost any reasonablelength, which makes it pos-sible to place the box insome place where it is en-tirely concealed while the re-ceiver may be in anotherpart of the room. One tele-phone which is very well ar-ranged has the box within abuilt-in window seat; in an-other instance it is placed be-hind the books in a set oflow bookshelves. In boththese cases the bells havebeen so muffled that theirring is only the faintest oftinkles and the receivers, which are of the smallestand most unobtrusive sortare set where they cannot in-terfere with the beauty oftheir surroundings. When A moment and a step puts the cook in communication with upstairsplanning a home, be it in city or country, why not provide kept well sharpened by thea suitable place for the telephone? Its use in the home telephone should be studied
Text Appearing After Image:
is now almost as universal asthe use of a system for light-ing or heating the house andits importance may as wellbe recognized and a fittingplace made for it. By a suit-able place is meant some spotwhere one using the tele-phone may enjoy some de-gree of privacy, for nothingis more unsatisfactory thanto use the telephone while anumber of people are con-versing nearby or while mu-sic of any kind is in progress.A most complete little tele-phone room is part of ahouse not far from Boston. Here a tiny space some fivefeet square, ventilated andlighted by a small window, has been arranged under thestairs. The little room isprovided with a door whichmakes it sound proof, thereceiver is placed upon a lowtable, and a small settee isdrawn up closely at hand. Aclockis just above, andupon arack are telephone directory, time tables, and memorandapads, while a drawer containsa supply of pencils which areyoung son of the family. Theto make the most of its utility.
