as was possibleand suggested the use of the knee chest position for the patient. For the treatment to be of any value it was seen that thegeneral principles must follow closely those used in adequate, successful breast work. This necessitated discarding all formsof cavity tubes and using standard tubes that could be care-fully tested as to the amount of radiation given off understandard normal conditions of current supply and resistance oftube. My standard conditions conform rather closely to Pan-coasts definition of a tube suitable for his method of treatingleukemia. As it was desirous of getting a large cone of rays the use ofa speculum of as great a diameter as was possible and of shortlength was indicated. In addition a tube of small diameter—■not over 6 inches—placed close to the speculum helped mate-rially to enlarge the cone. The French tubes of 140 mm. Dachtler: Carcinoma of the Uterus 43 diameter suitable for use with the Sabourand pastules answeradmirably for this work.
Text Appearing After Image:
At this time a patient was available that was suited for thistreatment and it was immediately started. In place of a tablea couch was used as it was found that it was much easier forthe patient to assume and maintain the knee chest position fora sufficient length of time. Corsets must be removed and thechest lowered as far as possible. This allows ballooning of thevagina and the viscera to gravitate from the pelvis. A Fergu-son speculum \y2 inches in diameter and 3 inches long wasused. This was passed through a hole in the center of a sheetof protecting material 18 inches square which was fastened bytapes passed around the patients body. The tube could thenbe placed in contact with the bell mouth of the speculum whichserved to center the tube to it. The coil terminals, preferablycarried from overhead, were easily adjusted and out of theway. This method had one draw-back—the difficulty of ad-justing the speculum at angles to reach as much of the parime-trium as possible. This was ove
