But some-how or other the )\Iexican element has worked itsway into Cochiti, and in several instances the Indianand Mexican have intermarried, making the sepa-ration of the races impossible. Juan conducted us to the home of a friend—Juande Jesus Herrara—w^ho with his family, consisting ofan aged father and mother, a wife and three children,lived in the little adobe house that for the follow-ing few days was our home. One of the two roomson the ground floor was assigned to us for use as abedroom, kitchen and reception-room during ourstay. We spread the blankets on the floor in onecorner, and our bedroom was ready for use; lioht-ing a fire on the hearth and preparing our eveningmeal made the kitchen a reality, while entertaininghalf a dozen old bucks and squaws who had beendrawn to the spot out of curiosity gave the place quite the air of a reception-room. 60
