Title
ampulla
Description
English: A Medieval lead ampulla. It is a flattened flask-shape and largely complete, lacking its side handles due to old breaks, and being a little bent and cracked, perhaps due to plough damage. There are two transverse grooves defining the waist of the flask on both sides. Beneath this on one side can be seen a crown over a W or two interlinked Vs, and on the other side a larger bifoliate crown with central fleur de lis. These motifs are depicted against a fine criss-cross background within a roundel. The flask measures 55.81mm in length, 32.22mm in maximum width, tapering to 27mm at its waist, and weighs 28.77g.

An ampulla with identical designs from medieval Salisbury is illustrated in Spencer 1990, no.180. The W could indicate the pilgrimage site of Walsingham, Norfolk, and equally if read as two Vs, could stand for Mary. Virgin of Virgins.
