Title
Ampulla
Description
English: A cast lead alloy medieval pilgrimage ampulla or flask c. 1100 - 1500 AD. The ampulla has a damaged top with what may be described as 'bite marks' to both sides of that top edge, as if to re-seal the vessel but the indentations are too small to have been made by teeth! One broken suspension loop remains, the other is missing.

One face of the flask depicts a heart shaped motif, infilled with a fine cross hatch and a floriate central stem to the top, which may represent the centre outline of a crown. The other side has significant lead erosion, leaving no outline of possible design detail. This 'strawberry' like heart is a common motif and similar, hearts have been found on ampulla found in Salisbury (Spencer 1990, 91; ref. 186). The heart motif has been found on ampullae in Salisbury (Spencer 1990:91 no 186), London, Maltby Springs, Lincs. and Brandon in Suffolk (ibid., 60; no 132), and in many other locations. It is thought perhaps to relate to Bromholm Priory, Norfolk.

The surface is oxidised and eroded with a light grey/white patina.
