The number of hisslaves was the best gauge of a mans wealth, and there is recordof some sixty-seven famihes each of which owned more thanthree hundred slaves. The total number of families owning ahundred slaves or more was reported in the census of 1850as 1733. However, these great slaveholders were a compara-tively small portion of the conmiunity. More than half ofthe slaveholders owned less than five slaves each.
