Title |
An incomplete cast copper alloy key, dating to the 14th/ 15th century AD. |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy key, dating to the 14th/ 15th century AD (length: 55.2mm; width at head: 32.8mm; thickness at decorated head: 3.9mm; diameter at top of key: 13.7mm; weight: 27.35g). The top of the key and only part of the shank remain. At the top, a circular and hollow attachment has been added separately, possibly to help with fixing to a belt? This feature has a single indented line at the top and bottom. Below the possible attachment, the decorated lozenge-shaped head has the remains of a protruding knob at one side, although it is worn on the opposing side. A slightly irregular openwork cross is in the centre of the head, with small openworked and rectangular holes (length: 5.8mm) appearing along the diagonal edges of the head outside of the cross. Only a small area of the shank is present below the head of the key, with two ridges at the start of the shank. The shank also appears to be hollow. The artefact is worn but in a fair condition with a dark green/ brown patina. A very similar design was found at Aldgate and is now part of the Museum of London collection (see London Museums Catalogues: No 7, 1940, pages 140, plate XXIX, ref no 13). This type of key has been classified as a Type VI in the catalogue, and may be dated to the 14th and 15th centuries. Keys with suspension loops may specific date to the 15th century. Another identical example has been recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme in the West Midlands (WMID-DA3604), from the same area. |
