ted between the layers of the dura mater forming the cavernous sinus, but covered by the lining membrane of the sinus. It at first ascends to theposterior clinoid process, then passes forwards by the side of the body of thesphenoid bone, and again curves upwards on the inner side of the anteriorclinoid process, and perforates the dura mater forming the roof of the sinus. Inthis part of its course it is surrounded by filaments of the sympathetic nerve, andhas in relation wdth it externally the sixth nerve. 576 ARTEEIES Cerebral Portion.—Having perforated the dura mater, on the inner side of theanterior cHnoid process, the internal carotid passes between the second and thirdcranial nerves to the anterior perforated spot at the inner extremity of the fissureof Sylvius, v^here. it gives off its terminal or cerebral branches. This portionof the artery has the optic nerve on its inner side, and the third nerve externally. Fig. 391.—The internal carotid and vertebral arteries. Right side.

Its originsometimes takes place from the arch of the aorta; in such rare instances, this vessel hasbeen found to be placed nearer the middle line of the neck than the external carotid, asfar upwards as the larynx, when the latter vessel crossed the internal carotid. The courseof the vessel, instead of being straight, may be very tortuous. A few instances are recordedin which this vessel was altogether absent: in one of these the common carotid passed upthe neck, and gave off the usual branches of the external carotid: the cranial portion of the INTERNAL CAROTID 577 internal carotid being replaced by two branches of the internal maxillary, which enteredthe skull through the foramen rotiindum and ovale, and joined to form a single vessel.
