MALE OEGANS OF GENERATION The Prostate Gland THE Prostate Gland (jrpoto-Trjfxi, to stand before) is a pale, firm, glandular body,which is placed immediately in front of the neck of the bladder and aroundthe commencement of the urethra. the rectum, through which it may be distinctly felt, especially when enlarged. Inshape and size it resembles a chestnut. Its base is directed upwards and backwards towards the neck of the bladder. Its a2)ex is directed downw^ards and forwards to the deep perineal fascia, whichit touches. Its posterior surface is smooth, marked by a shght longitudinal furrow, andrests on the rectum, to which it is connected by dense areolar tissue. Its anterior surface is convex, and placed about three-quarters of an inchbelow the pubic symphysis, from which it is separated by a plexus of veins anda quantity of loose fat.
