Stratified epithelium consists of several layers of cells superimposed one onthe top of the other and varying gi^eatly in shape. The cells of the deepest layerare for the most part columnar in form, and as a rule form a single layer, placedvertically on the supporting membrane; above these are several layers of Fig. 12.—Epithelial cells from the oral cavity of man. They here undergo a chemical change from the conversion of their proto-plasm into a horny substance. A variety of squamous epithelium which is found in the deeper layers ofstratified pavement-epithelium has been termed^nc/iZe cells. These cells possessshort fine fibrils which pass from their margins to those of neighbouring cells, serving to connect them together. Since they are not here closely connectedtogether by cement-substance, but are separated from each other by intercellularchannels, across which these fine fibrils may be seen bridging, this gives to thecell, w^hen isolated,, the appearance of being covered over with a number ,of short CONNECTIA^E TISSUES 15 spikes, in conse
