The branches of the facial nerve cross the artery, andthe infra-orbital nerve lies beneath it. The branches of this vessel may be divided into two sets : those given offbelow the jaw^ (cervical), and those on the face (facial). The inferior or ascending palatine (fig. 391) passes up between the Stylo-glossus and Stylo-pharyngeus to the outer side of the pharynx, along which it iscontinued between the Superior constrictor and the Internal pterygoid to nearthe base of the skull. It supplies the neighbouring muscles, the tonsil, and Fig. 38S.—-The arteries of the face and scalp.*
