He was chiefly em-ployed by thofe who required fubjecls for mechanical move-ments, fuch as clocks for the Eafl Indies, in which figures arereprefented, that are put in motion by the machine which theydecorate. He painted in a variety of ways, landfcapes and ftill life, buthis favourite productions were candle-light pieces ; fuch as, oldmen reading by the light of a taper held in the hand, with, manyfimilar fubjefrs, wherein the light of a candle was fufficientlywell reprefented to catch the eyes of inferior collectors; buthis works were moftly copies after prints from Schalken, andHontorft. He was an exhibitor with the Free Society of Artifts, fromthe year 1766 to 1769 inclufive; during which time he refidedat Stangate, Lambeth. It is not known when he died, but itis fuppofed to have been about the year 1780, as he ceafed toexhibit at that period. s

JJevtf- pma> SCfiL Anecdotes of Fainting. 33 MRS. GRACE, A lady who for feveral years exhibited with the Society ofArtifts. The fubjecls of her pencil were chiefly portraits in oilcolours, but of their merits the author can recollect little; heonly remembers that they were heavy in their colouring. Shefometimes attempted hiftory, as in the year 1767, when the fub-ject of her piclure was, Antigonus, Seleucus, and Stratonice.She lived feveral years in Throgmorton-ftreet, but afterwardsremoved to Devonfhire-fquare, Bifliopfgate-ftreet. She ceafedto exhibit in 1769, that being the laft year in which her nameappears in the Exhibition Catalogues. One of her exhibitionpictures was defcribed in the Catalogue, as Mr. Graces portrait,by which circumftance it may be prefumed fhe was a marriedlady. FRANCIS COTES, R.A.
