Title
Anglo-Saxon Buckle
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy buckle with integral plate of probable Early-Medieval or later date. It is missing the attachment end due to old breaks. The buckle has an oval shaped frame that is oval shaped in section. It has an integrally cast plate that is rectangular in form and section, has a slightly curved profile and terminates in old breaks at the attachment end. At the frame end of the plate is a single central pin hole through which hinges a separately cast copper-alloy pin that is cylindrical in form and has a curved, blunt tip. The entire object has a green patina and measures 13.51mm in width, 40.09mm in length (including plate; 7.22mm excluding plate), 2.21mm in thickness at weighs 5.70g.

This is an incomplete buckle frame of probable Early-Medieval/Anglo-Saxon date. It finds some similarities in buckles within Marzinzik's Type II.16 buckles with elongated narrow plates, although perhaps differs slightly through the presence of the integral plate. This group is largely a southern and western group, although with examples known from East Anglia, and is dated broadly to the 6th century AD, possibly extending back ito the 5th (Marzinzik, 2003: pp. 45). Similar examples are noted from Coddenham in Suffolk (West, 1998: nos. 21.1, 21.4, 21.7). It is probable that the current example may belong the the same or similar group and is therefore of similar 6th century AD date.
