Title |
Anglo-Saxon bone comb fragment |
||
Description |
English: Fragment of a bone comb, probably early Anglo-Saxon in date as it was discovered associated with other contemporary cemetery material. Only two of the three bone plates survive; remaining is the plano-convex outer plate which is attached to a near complete central 'comb' panel by the means of an iron rivet. The outer plate is decorated along either edge by three incised lines. In the centre is a row of ring and dot motifs each joined by a diagonal line. Either side of the outer plate bears a series of small knife marks made as the maker carved out the teeth for the comb from the central plate. One side of the central plate has thinner, denser row of teeth circa 0.9mm apart, whilst the other are more widely spaced apart, with a gap of circa 0.5mm. The teeth are rectangular in cross section and the larger row is decorated with transverse lines. |
