Title
Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch
Description
English: An incomplete and worn cast copper-alloy cruciform brooch of Anglo-Saxon/Early-Medieval date. Only the base of the bow, top of the foot and catchplate survive intact, the remainder of the object now missing due to old breaks. The base of the bow has a flat rectangular panel that is rectangular in section, above which can perhaps be seen a faceted bow, although this is uncertain due to old breaks. At the join of foot and bow the foot is flat and rectangular in form, tapering slightly to the remains of a zoomorphic/horse head terminal. This has moulded decoration on the front face comprising two transverse bands beneath which the terminal is triangular in section with prominent central ridge that terminates in old breaks above any further decorative elements. On the back face of the foot is an integrally cast copper-alloy catchplate that is flat, rectangular in form and missing most of its folded outer edge due to old breaks. The entire object measures 28.55mm in length, 12.03mm in width at bow, 2.29mm in thickness at foot (3.27mm in thickness at bow), and weighs 7.53g.

This is an incomplete Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch with horse head terminal. It is of probable 5th to 6th century AD date, c.450-600 AD.
