Title
Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy cruciform brooch of Early-Medieval/Anglo-Saxon date. It is missing the headplate and pin, and the terminal end is in two joining fragments due to old breaks. The bow is sub-triangular in section with flat back face and faceted front face. At each end of the bow is a flattened rectangular panel with incised transverse grooves at top and bottom and small triangular notches to each side. Extending from the base of the bow is the damaged foot, which is triangular in plan and zoomorphic in form. This comprises transverse grooves/ridges beneath which are bulging triangular eyes surrounded by incised grooves. Beneath the eyes the snout is faceted, tapering to a rounded point that is perhaps incomplete due to post-depositional wear. On the back face of the foot is an integrally cast catchplate that has a folded outer edge and deep pin groove. The entire object measures 59.15mm in length, 7.55mm in width at bow, 4.37mm in thickness at bow, and weighs 8.90g.

This is an incomplete Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch similar to examples recorded from Suffolk (e.g. West, 1998: no. 100.8, 133.11 or 136.1). It is of Early Anglo-Saxon date, probably dating to the 5th or 6th centuries AD, c.410-550 AD.
