Title |
Anglo-Saxon iron spear |
||
Description |
English: Nearly complete iron spear head. The spear head is socketed, open and and tapers to the blade. The socket terminal is damaged. The blade is lozenge shaped in cross-section and has wide shoulders tapering to the tip. The blade is slightly bowed above the shoulders and the tip has been bent over and now points down towards the socket. The bends have patinated breaks and appear to have been done intentionally rather than the result of accidental damage. The external diameter of the socket is 16mm. The blade length is approximately 225mm in total, and 5mm thick, although some of this will be attributed to corrosion. The surface of the spearhead is very corroded however there are patches of a whitish patina spread sporadically on both sides. This white patina also covers some breaks. |
