Title
Anglo-Saxon mount
Description
English: Nearly complete gilded copper alloy disc brooch. The brooch is openwork and in the form of an equal-armed cross with splayed arms and smaller, similar arms set diagonally. In the centre there is an empty rivet hole that would have contained a small boss. The larger arms are each decorated with interlace, appearing to have some animal element to them. The smaller arms are undecorated apart from the gilding. In the centre of the larger arms just before they splay there is a rivet hole.

A very similar example was discovered at Elmsett, Suffolk, and is published in West, 1998, fig. 24.6, p140. The Suffolk example had small mounts riveted through the holes, one of which formed the head to a wire spring behind. The reverse of the Sibsey brooch has rectangular marks around two opposing rivet holes suggesting that this is where the mounts were originally set.

A further less elaborate example is on the PAS database at LIN-833322. Also compare BH-7F2D44 and a group of silver examples: BM-138695 and LIN-9B7487, NMS-972E58 (a) and (c), BH-685AA3.
