Title |
Anglo-Saxon small long brooch |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete copper alloy small long brooch. The brooch has a square headplate decorated with a double linear perimeter. Inside the perimeter is another border or punched crescents. There are three integral flat wings decorating the headplate; each wing is broken however it is presumed that they were originally semi-circular in shape. The wings are decorated with a double linear collar and a row of punched crescents. The bow is short, faceted and concave on the reverse. There is a plain rectangular panel below with a moulded ridged collar seperating the panel from the foot. The foot is bent upwards at a circa 45 degree angle to the bow. The foot is damaged, however it is likely to have originally been triangular in shape. The brooch has an even patina, and the bend in the foot may have been caused in antiquity as there are no visible signs of recent damage. There is a patch of iron corrosion on the reverse of the headplate where the lug would have been. The catchplate is damaged. |
