Title |
Anglo-Saxon tweezers - side b |
||
Description |
English: Copper-alloy tweezers of Anglo-Saxon date (probably 6th-7th C. AD). Piece has been made (cast?) in one piece and formed into tweezers by bending it in the middle. Measures 4.9mm at the top (where the metal strip is bent double) and gradually widens out towards the open (use) end, to a maximum width of 15.5mm. The metal strip at the use end is curved inwards slightly on both sides in order to improve functionality. Both sides are decorated by a pair of incised grooves, which run along the long sides of the object and, towards the use end, a simple incised dot pattern. The tweezers were probably originally hung on a strap. A simple copper-alloy ring is attached to the top of the object. It measures 13.4mm in diameter and is made of twisted wire. Other dimensions: The thickness of the metal sheet is 0.8mm. Weight = 8.51g. The piece has undergone stabilisation in the conservation lab, although the condition was already very good. |
