Title
Animal bell
Description
English:

An incomplete undecorated worn cast copper-alloy animal (crotal or rumbler) bell dating from c. AD1500-1650).

The bell comprises two hemispherical domes divided horizontally by a circumferential ridge. The upper hemisphere has two circular sound holes. . A square integral suspension loop projects from the apex of the upper dome, with drilled and bevelled hole and bevelled sides. The lower hemisphere has a long, thin sound slit with circular holes at the ends. The inner iron ball or clapper is still present. Neither hemisphere are decorated. The suspension loop is square with a very larger evenly drilled apperture. The wear present and corrosion obscures much of the detail.

R Blunt's (undated) work suggests, based on the one piece design, drilled suspension loop date c.16th- mid 17th centuries AD. Unfortunately the simple initial mark is very limiting in terms of identifying the maker.
