short and deep. Scales in less than 30 series. Lateral lineceasing below soft dorsal. Teeth fixed, small, in a narrow villiformband, the outer row somewhat larger, conical. Preopercle and some-times preorbital serrate, without strong spines. Dorsal spines 12-13(17 in one species). If Dascyllus is to be reckoned identical with Dascillus, Cantorsgeneric name must be used. Key to the South African species. 1. Brown, a white spot on occiput, and another on lateral line below middle of dorsal; the spots more or less distinct .... trimaculatus. 2. Greyish or yellowish, each scale with a bluish streak . . marginatus. 3. Rosy, a faint dark cross-bar from origin of dorsal to pectoral . . carneus. PLATE XXIX. FIG. TEXT-PAGE 1.
