The original rock of the Negaunee iron-bearing formation was acherty iron-bearing carbonate, precisely as in the districts alreadydescribed. Furthermore, at various places the iron carbonateapproached very closely to a siderite. The metamorphism of theformation is less simple than in the districts already described, in thatthere have been two periods of alteration. In inter-Marquette time theerosion cut deep enough to expose the Negaunee formation. The upperpart of this formation which was in the belt of weathering was largelytransformed into ferruginous slates and ferruginous cherts.
