The second half deals with England from the earliesttime to the present. The purpose of this course is to give to the studenta comprehensive knowledge of the foundational principles of the Englishstate. The Celtic, Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Norman influences. Thereformation in England, the struggle between king and parliament, Eng-lish industrial and social progress, colonial expansion and the growth ofdemocracy suggest the topics emphasized. Each student is required tomake a report on some topic suggested by the instructor. Required ofall students.

IN THE LIBRARY. Latin.—Eighty weeks. No preparation is required for entrance intothe classes beginning Latin other than the general requirements for ad-mission into the School. Two years of Latin are offered. A year is onehour per day of class work for forty weeks. The work of the Latin department is arranged by years as follows: First Year.—Beginning Latin, based on Lowe and Butlers BellumHelveticum. This covers as a text for reading the thirty paragraphs ofthe Helvetian war. This implies thorough and systematic drill in allLatin inflections, the careful development of points of syntax as renderednecessary by the text, and supplementary drill in the writing of Latinand English sentences illustrating the vocabulary and constructions ofCaesar. The prime purpose of this years work is to secure the ready andaccurate recognition of forms and the development of the true meaningof each connected Latin sentence, in the order in which the words arewritten, by observing the significance of
