Someportions of the park were burned over during the cater-pillar season, thus checking the insects to a great extent. Thispark must be given very careful attention in the future, sothat it may not be seriously damaged by the ravages of thegypsy moth caterpillars. To care for this area of 1,000 acresproperly is a hard problem, as it means a large expenditure ofmoney, and it must be most systematically done in order thatgood results may be obtained. The sections of the city of Lynnbordering on this park suffer constantly from reinfestation fromthis source. Shaker Glen is not a public park, but is owned by privateindividuals and much frequented by the public. Inasmuch as itwas seriously infested, it was deemed advisable last year to startthinning operations, treat the egg clusters and put it in conditionfor spraying. PUBLIC DOCUMENT —No. 73. 33 great portion of it was sprayed, and at the present time it is invery good condition, although some work on its borders shouldbe done. We hope to do this protective work during the winter. Mt. Ann Park, Gloucester, was found to be in a seriouscondition, and we were called upon by the board of trustees toassist them in the work of cleaning the same. After makinga slight inspection of the park it was found necessary to dosome thinning, and the whole area, consisting of some 50 acres,was scouted very thoroughly, the gypsy moth egg clusters beingtreated as found. During the caterpillar season some bur-lapping was done in the worst infested parts. The coming seasonit will be necessary to thin about half of the area and do thoroughwork later on. The next caterpillar, season it should be thor-oughly sprayed. The borders of this park are also in very badcondition, and it will be necessary
