Husk foot mat, Seneca specimen IROQUOIS USES OF MAIZE 83 Husks now are placed over the back of the neck and carried diag-onally across the chest from either side. The same process is re-peated from the front and the husk drawn diagonally across theback. This produces body and shoulders. The legs are thenbraided or neatly rolled into shape, wound spirally with twine andtied tightly at the ankle. The footis then bent forward at rightangles to the leg and wound intoshape. The arms undergo a simi-lar process but no attempt is madeto simulate hands. The head andbody are now ready for covering.For the head the wide husks areheld upward against the top ofthe head and a string passedaround them. The husks are thenbent downward and the stringtightened. This leaves a little cir-cular opening at the top of thehead. The head cover husks aredrawn tightly over the form andtied at the neck, which is after-ward wound neatly with a smoothhusk. More diagonal pieces areplaced over the shoulders fore and
