d Lorrain granite, which intrudedthe Temiskaming but is older than the Cobalt series. Origin of the Conglomerate In the first edition of this report, concerning the origin of the conglomerate itwas said: It is difficult to understand, for example, how certain large boulders ofgranite in the conglomerate, which forms part of the highest outcrops of the LowerHuronian (Cobalt series), have been carried so far from their parent masses. Theselarge boulders are found over much of the district, and there are now no outcrops ofgranite in the neighborhood of many of them. ... In the present state of ourknowledge we have little warrant for claiming that the granite boulders, often two orthree feet or more in diameter and distant a couple of miles from exposures of therock, indicate glacial conditions during Lower Huronian times, although we have noproof to the contrary.f ♦Geikie, Text-Book of Geology, p. 769. tFourteenth Report, Bureau of Mines. 1913 Cobalt-Nickel Arsenides and Silver 87 A couple of years after this report was published Dr. A. P. Coleman, while on avisit to the Trethewey mine, discovered striated boulders in the conglomerate in anoutcrop on this property! that have all the characteristics of those which are foundin glacial deposits. Hence, Dr. Coleman, and other writers have decided that a certainpart, at least, of the conglomerate of the Cobalt series is of glacial origin. In the opinion of the present writer more evidence is required before the glacialorigin can be accepted. Although for many years conglomerates similar to those ofCobalt have been studied over a vast extent of territory in northern Ontario, no glaci-ated surface on the rocks underlying this conglomerate has been discovered. Duringthe last few years several workers in the Cobalt and surrounding areas have diligentlysearched for such a surface, but without success. The underlying rocks present, char-acteristically, a weathered surface, there
