artz and hornblende, thefeldspar generally showing albite twinning lamellae. Two thin sections were exam-ined of granite pebbles from the conglomerate between Haileybury and New Liskeard. They are made up of feldspar, quartz and hornblende; in one slide the feldspar occursIn phenocrysts, while in the other a porphyritic texture is lacking. A thin sectionfrom a granite gneiss pebble in the locality last mentioned shows the rock to be com-posed of quartz, feldspar and hornblende. These granite and granite gneiss pebblesare normal types. The conglomerates have a white or grey color, due to the preponderance of light-colored pebbles, such as quartz and feldspar porphyry, felsites, etc. The size of thepebbhs varies from tiny fragments to those which may be 15 inches or more indiameter. Under the microscope the greywackes are seen to consist of angular fragments ofquartz and feldspar set in a matrix of the same minerals in a state of fine division, 1913 Cobalt=I\ickel Arsenides and Silver 65

Fig-. 29. Temiskaming series, with vertical dip, near shore of Lake Temiskaming.between Haileybury and New Liskeard. Cross-bedding is shown in upper partof picture. 66 Bureau of Mines No. 4 together with epidote, chlorite, hornblende and mica. In thin sections it is difficultto distinguish some of the greywackes from similar rocks in the Cobalt series, but onaccount of the disturbed condition of the Temiskaming series, and the comparativelyundisturbed condition of the Cobalt series, they may be differentiated in the field. Onthe north part of lot 10, in the second concession of Bucke, the greywackes pass intovery fine grained rusty rocks, which look like certain facies of iron formation. Thin sections of the grey slates at Sharp Landing, lake Temiskaming, show themto. be very fine-grained dense rocks, made up of opaque or almost opaque minerals, difficult to identify on account of their minute size. Iron formation outcrops at theLanding and the Temiskaming conglomerate contains pebbles
