estimated cost (exclusive of ;)aved roadways, tracks, andbuildings) of constructing sea-walls and filling the docks andthe land necessary for approaches and storage, and for teamsand railroads, would be about $7,oOO,000 per 10,000,000square feet, estimatiiig filling at 40 cents per cubic yard andsea-walls at $70 per linear foot. The following is an estimate for utilizing a portion of theBird Island flats, which belong to the city, as a beginning ofthe proj^osed municipal dock system. The plan contemplates the closing of the present channelbetween East Boston and the fiats and the taking of severalof the existing Avharves. The estimated cost (exclusive ofroadways, buildings, etc.) for constructing two piers, to be1,000 feet in length by 2.50 feet in width, with a filled area300 feet in depth at the head of the docks for roadway,storage of cars, etc., with no allowance for land damages, is$850,000. The assessed value of the land and docks which it wouldbe necessary to take is $138,000.

In October, 18J4, by request of the Superintendent ofStreets, plans and estimates were made for a stone culvertwith brick arch at Preston street, Dorchester. The con-struction of this culvert was afterwards supervised. It wasbuilt at a cost of $700. Stony-brook Improvement. The improvement of Stony brook, from the Hyde Park lineto a point 400 feet below Mt. Hope street, was completedduring the past year by Messrs. Blake & Page, in accord-ance with their contract. The work consisted in widenins:the old channel below Ashland street to a bottom width of10 feet, with side slopes of 1J to 1, and in lowering the bedof the brook to a uniform grade of 0.6 foot in 1,000.
