Brigadier General James Samuel Wadsworth, U. S. Volunteers. Brigadier-General James Samuel Wadsworth. Gen. James S. Wadsworth was born in Geneseo, N. Y.,October 30,1807. He was the son of James Wadsworth, who wasborn in Durham, Conn., April 20, 1768, graduated at Yale in 1787,removed to what is now the town of Geneseo in 1790, and died thereJune 8, 1844, one of the wealthiest land proprietors of the State. General Wadsworth was educated at Harvard and Yale; hestudied law in Albany and finished his legal education under theeye of Daniel Webster. Admitted to the bar in 1833, he neverpracticed law, because the management of his vast estates in west-ern New York—which amounted to over fifteen thousand acres,engrossed all his time. Like his father, he was an eminent philan-thropist, and founded a public library in Geneseo, subscribed liber-ally to the endowment of Geneseo College, and was largely instru-mental in establishing the school district library system in thisState.
