Text Appearing Before Image:
hat convention, the question whether the Bibleshould be read in the public schools should rest with the several schoolboards of the state, where it had rested under the Constitutions of1818 and 1848. While it is true this court may construe the Constitu-tion, it has not the power, and it should not, under a pretext to con-strue the Constitution, amend it, and certainly not in a case like this, where the effect of the amendment will be to deprive many thousandsof children living in this state of any knowledge of the princplestaught in the Bible, as the Bible is not taught in all the homes of the 54 SCHOOL REPORT state, and the only knowledge which a large number of children in thisstate will ever gain of the Bible must be through the public schools, and if they do not get such knowledge there it will be lost to thementirely. We therefore most respectfully dissent from the majorityopinion, and earnestly protest against a result which excludes the Biblefrom the public schools of the state.
