ccupied by the Miocene Pah-Ute lake. Since the Sierra Nevada along its crest ami eastern wall is chiefly formed of gran-itoid rocks, it is impossible to determine tin1 amount of the drop which the down-ward movement has caused; for if, as is evident, the fault occurred before theMiocene, there has been the enormous erosion of all subsequent time to reduce thecrest of the great range.2 In a recent paper Walcott1 expresses similar views as to the structureof the ranges of southern Nevada, as follows: As seen from the western slope of the White Mountain range, the next rauge to the eastward, Silver Peak, is apparently a monocline facing westward: but Hornthe known structure of thetireat Hasin ranges, such as those of the Eureka district, 1 Fortieth Parallel Survey, Systematic (ioolocjy. GEOLOGIC MAP OF THE OLDER FORMATIONS OF THE SIERRA NEVADA. tubneb.1 MODE OF FORMATION OF THE SIERRA NEVADA. 533 Nevada, the Oqiiirr Range, Utah, and others illustrated by the geologists of theWheeler survey, it appears that in the broad Paleozoic area between the SierraNevada on the west and the early Paleozoic shore-line on the east (Colorado) a periodof folding and thrust faulting was followed by a period of vertical faulting, whichdisplaced the strata that had been folded and faulted in the preceding epoch. Theextent and character of this disturbance can he determined only by a careful studyof each of the mountain ranges for a distance of over 500 miles east and west andprobably 1,000 miles north and south; and the great geologic problems will not befully solved until the areal geology of the region between the one hundred and ninthand one hundred aud nineteenth meridians shall have been mapped. In 1S89 Prof. Joseph Le Gonte1 published a paper on the Origin ofnormal faults, in whic
