tlook of the Syrian field has brightened with newhope during the year in consequence of the political changes whichhave occurred in the East, and especially the formation of an Anglo-Turkish treaty, by which an English protectorate has been establishedover Syria. Although good results from this arrangement were not realized asrapidly as at first expected, yet some steps have been taken whichshow that British power is beginning to be felt. The occupation ofCyprus, and the probable occupation of a port in Northern Syria, havegiven an additional sense of security, and some changes have beenmade in the police regulations of other large cities which seem aus-picious. The appointment of Midhat Pasha as Governor-General ofSyria is also hailed with satisfaction as indicative of reform. In the remote parts of the mission field, and especially in the regionsouth and east of Sidon, there had been little protection for the poorProtestants. They had felt not a little embittered toward the mission,

In the North, also, and especially in and around Hamath, persecu-tion had been rife, and on one occasion the authorities were calledupon to interfere. Fortunately there was something worthy the nameof civil authority found there, and the rioters were arrested and forsome time confined in prison. The latest news from Syria shows improvement on every hand.Khurrab (which means the Destroyer), who has ravaged SouthernSyria and Northern Palestine for ten years with his gang of murderersand outlaws, in utter defiance of the Government, was hung in themarket-plaoe of Nebatiyeh (the very center of the Sidon Missionfield) in the latter part of March, and others of his followers in otherparts of the district. This is a good beginning for Midhat Pasha.He has also obtained permission from the Sultan to devote one-thirdof the revenues of Syria to internal improvemen
