Not a few of the converts admitted to the churchwere first brought in the schools to Christ as their Saviour. In the work of translating the New Testament Scriptures, Dr. Hep-burn, in connection with a committee, has sjient most of his time.Mr. Thompson has been engaged in translating the book of Genesis,in connection with another committee, and eleven chapters have beenpublished. It is expected that the New Testament translation will becompleted during this year. The missionary outlook in Japan continues to be both discouragingand hopeful. No progress has been made, and none is likely soon tobe made, in the oi)ening of the country to the residence of foreigners,and, for the present, missionaries and other foreigne.-s must reside inthe few places specified in the treaties. Skeptical and irreligious influences mark the course of manyforeign residents, and find too ready a reception in the native mind,especially of the higher classes. On the other hand, the door of entrancehas been partly opened. Progress has been made. The work of ourChurch has been greatly favored. New churches have been formedin the last year, and all tlie churches have received new members.The schools are doing a good work. The native laborers seem to beearnest and devoted men, and their influence and efforts have givengreat satisfaction to the missionaries. Candidates are in preparationfor the ministry. These things are precious evidences of the presenceof the Holy Spirit. And the Word of God will soon be completelytranslated and i)rinted.
