Title
Anthropomorphic Roman steelyard weight
Description
English: A seemingly incomplete Roman cast copper-alloy steelyard weight with lead core in the form of a human bust. The surviving copper-alloy shell consists of the upper surface and the sides and is very well moulded. The face is quite plump with worn moulded nose and eyes. The downturned mouth is incised. Over the nose, towards the mouth, is a linear incision through the surface metal - a recent strike. The shoulder length hair is curled at the bottom; hair higher up is delineated by curvilinear incisions. Above the forehead hair is pushed up into a small bunch. Behind this is the suspension loop. The upper chest is covered with a moulded foliate design. The representation is possibly Cupid emerging from a calyx (the sepals of a flower). Low down on the reverse face, is a rectangular, projecting bar. The reverse face is open with evidence of breaks to the copper alloy at the back of the head, but with smoother edges below the hair indicating that this was always open. The reverse face is dominated by off-white corroded lead, with which the weight was once filled completely; in some areas the lead is very white and powdery.
