Title
Anthropomorphic strap end
Description
English: A complete copper alloy two piece strap end dating to the medieval period dating to the 14th century.

The strap end is made of two parts, a cast front plate and a sheet back plate. The the cast decoration is in two parts: first is sub-rectangular and tapering with the strap attachment at the wider end. The front is undecorated and the reverse has a space for the strap with a circular projection. The second part of the cast decoration is attached to the thinner end of the rectangle and form the terminal. It is anthropomorphic in style and is a man's head. The neck projects out from the rectangle and the face is quite simple and not bearded. The figure wears some sort of headdress or possibly a crown. The back of the head is flat and undecorated.

Similar examples are listed in Egan and Pritchard (1991: 133) catalogue number 614 and also one from a private collection and have been dated to the period 1350-1400. There have been several examples also recorded on the PAS database: SWYOR-267D33, HAMP-9AA6B4 and SUSS-678FA4.
