ii m present village is small and poor, and contains about200 inhabitants. The most conspicuous ruins are those of thechurch dedicated to St. John the Baptist, erected overthe spot which tradition claims to he thepilace of hishurial. The walls remain entire to a considerablehight, and enclose a large space, in which are nowa mosk and the small building over the tomb. Thetomb is a small chamber cut deep in the rock, towhich the descent is by twenty-one steps. It is saidthat during the reign of Julian the Apostate, theheathen broke open this sepulchre, burnt the bonesand scattered the ashes to the winds. Other ruinsare found on three terraces, and consist of a numberof columns, twelve of which stand in a row, the othersare scattered about. These columns are said to havebelonged to the Serai, or Palace. On the second ter-race, heaps of stone, lime, and rubbish are foundmixed with the soil in great profusion.
