The stately bearing and graceful repose of theyounger cedars contrasts singularly with the wildand fiantic attitude of the old ones; these appearas if flinging about their knotty and inuscular limbslike so many Laocoons, while. others lie rotting attheir feet. Their tenacity of life is marvellous, andthey look as if they had been struggling for existencefor thousands of years after they had reached matur-ity. The very air of the cedar impresses the beholderwith the idea of its comparative immortality. Thereis a firmness in the bark and a stability in the trunk,in the mode in which it lays hold of the ground, andin the form of the branches and their insertion intcthe trunk, scarcely found in any other tree.
