THE APOSTLES ON THE FRIEZE 259 legs of the several Apostles more or less behind his cornice, the artisthas obtained a most illusory effect of movement among these figures,making them appear to be at various distances from the verge of theabyss below. True, he might have expressed the same idea by placingthem in similar attitudes behind a real cornice, but it is clear that theillusion would no longer have been complete for the spectator below,who, on changing his point of view, would have seen either more orless of the figures in proportion to the interference of the projectionwith his line of sight. The painter, no doubt, realised this afterpainting his aged St. John in the Benedictine church, and at onceperceived that this obstacle to the illusionhe desired to produce might be entirelyobviated by painting a cornice, instead ofmaking use of the actual one.
